I’ve always liked the idea of an afternoon tea, but let’s face it – there’s not many aimed at men, so when I was told about the Sherlock Holmes afternoon tea at the St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel in my search for a father’s day venue, I thought, why not!
On arrival at the hotel, I felt like I’d been transported to a royal residence and thanks to the spontaneous heatwave – a royal residence far away from London! The tropical gardens featured an outdoor eating area, amongst a tropical paradise of palm trees and plants and the interior featured pattern marble floors and velvet furnishings.
Our table was dressed in the Sherlock Holmes theme, inclusive of a detective’s hat, magnifying glass, globe and a pipe (the St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel also offers Alice in Wonderland and The Jungle Book themed afternoon teas) . We were shown to our table, by the most attentive and enthusiastic Italian waiter, who talked us through the menu and the broad and varied range of tea on the menu). I went for a classic Earl Grey, with a dash of milk. Shortly after, two Sherlock Holmes Smoky Cigars arrived at our table – a smoked caramel mousse in a chocolate coating, these were served alongside whisky cocktails.
Savoury sandwiches followed, with my personal favourite being the Smoked Salmon with Orange Horseradish, before traditional scones, jam and clotted cream – which I’m pleased they didn’t experiment too much with. In the sweet side of the spectrum, we enjoyed Stout Cupcakes, Coffee & Bailey’s Cheesecake and the creme-de-la-creme, Macaroons flavoured with 25-year old Scotch.
So, if you’re looking for an afternoon tea experience in London, a little different to a traditional offering, at a great venue, why not check out the Sherlock Holmes afternoon tea at the St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel for yourself?
Prices start at £35pp and you can find out more info at https://www.stjamescourthotel.co.uk/about/englishclassics/
